The Ultrasound Technologist is a certified medical professional responsible for helping doctors and other health professionals diagnose patients' ailments through the operation of special equipment that uses high-frequency sound waves to record images of internal organs. The incumbent in this role works directly with patients and their families, doctors and other medical personnel in a dynamic and professional environment to provide the highest level of quality healthcare to all patients. Essential duties include performing diagnostic procedures applying prescribed ultrasound techniques, generating diagnostic imaging using two-dimensional imaging, spectral and color flow Doppler, echocardiography/cardiac ultrasound, vascular ultrasound, and general ultrasound. The technologist selects proper transducers and adjusts equipment, explains procedures to patients, keys test data into computers, generates preliminary reports, communicates STAT findings, consents patients, assists physicians with ultrasound guided biopsies, maintains equipment, monitors computerized documentation systems, utilizes knowledge of age-specific patient needs, influences SOPs for ultrasound best practices, provides safe environment for contrast material administration, assists with patient transport, follows standard precautions, and travels to different office locations as needed. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include current Basic Life Support certification, customer service skills, critical thinking, ability to work with minimal supervision, willingness to travel locally/regionally up to 40%, and physical ability to perform work involving standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds. Education and experience criteria include graduation from an accredited ultrasound technology school, preferred bachelor's degree in healthcare, minimum 6 months related work experience post internship, preferred 2 years experience, required Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer or Registered Cardiac Sonographer certification for echocardiograms, registration in specific ultrasound modalities performed, and Basic Life Support certification within first 90 days of employment.
